Posted By: Rj

Thanks Wykey. Personally, I don’t generally like quick time events like the one shown in the video, they feel too arbitrary to me and break me out of the simulation, harming the suspension of disbelief.

Some challenge that is directly related to the real game would be much better, so aligning the axes or something like that might be more fun.

I completely agree that offering more to the player allows us to also expect more but it is a balance and we need to make sure that we don’t expect too much :)

We love adding updates to our games to keep refining and improving them. It’s best when they are free updates but we obviously have to keep the lights on so some have to be paid extensions (like bowling is in Cricket). An “Advanced Pitching” extension might work quite nicely, especially if we can solve the fielding issue.

I’d say it occurs once maybe 2 out of 3 innings, and there are different types – the others involve holding down a button for a specific period of time, with a countdown clock, and aligning two axes – this is the first I could find…

Posted By: Wykey

Mechanics, got it, that sounds far better!

It’s difficult to know how a developer might feel about updates, add-ons and premium content, but you guys seem to embrace it, obviously I can’t speak for everyone, but from my perspective I’d be fully on-board.

I think sometimes the more you ask of players, the more they want to give and the more attached to your product they become. Certainly the bowling add-on for the cricket is a big part of my enjoyment – without wanting to be critical, I feel the baseball does lack something with the pitching as it is. It’s still very enjoyable, but it could be even more engaging. As long as you appreciate it’s aiming to be constructive suggestions from my point, then I’ll try and keep you thinking!

I’ll try and get a bigs link for you when I get home, but in the mean-time, have you seen the Com2us baseball homerun game? Their aiming system for batting is very intuitive. If I was top play a game with a combination of your swipe and their aim, I might think it was nearing perfection! (their system is always a “home run” power shot, there’s no subtlety)

I don’t know how you would embed youtube into Textile (the markup language we use here) but you can certainly link to them.

We decided that we would simplify the pitching mechanic (we refer to them as mechanics, not as minigames :) so that it was playable for the average user, as the more advanced system asks quite a lot of the player. As you mention however, an “advanced pitching” system would make an interesting expansion… I won’t write it into our roadmap just yet but you’ve certainly got me thinking!

Posted By: Wykey

I can see where you’re coming from about the fun element – and you’re right, telling the fielder where to throw isn’t much fun.

Let me try to refine my thoughts a bit…

How about instead of moving the fielder, a limited mini-game (forgive me for using that phrase all the time, I’m not sure how else to term it) kicks in at certain times.

Are you familiar with “The Bigs” – it’s an XBOX 360 Baseball game. The second in the series has catching mini-games. If the game decides that your pitch and the aI batter has hit the ball into an area that your fielder can make a catch, then it switches to a front on / top down / side on view (depending on the circumstance) and you have to either press the buttons shown on the screen, tap buttons in a certain order, align cross hairs and similar tasks.

The result – an automated catching animation is shown and you take a great catch, fire in a great return throw, you miss the catch or you fumble the ball.

Can I post youtube clips here? I’ll see if I can either find an example or record a clip for you.

It’ll show what I mean far better than I’ve explained!

Regarding the pitching – my game is cricket, and I was a decent quick(ish) bowler. But I also love the tradition, history and in no small measure the techniques of baseball. So the pitching in Baseball has always interested me more than the batting (although as a ‘typical’ quick bowler I’d bat much like a hitter!).

The system in your cricket game seems very nearly perfect for me, as someone who has a fair understanding of the dynamic of 2/4/ seam and straight up fastballs, sliders, knuckleballs, cutter, splitters and curveballs.

Ultimately the wrist snap, the arm action and the seam position are the driving forces in how the baseball rises, falls, wobbles or fades.

If I’d never seen your cricket game, and I saw a pitching ‘mini-game’ – minus the bounce, and with maybe an arm position gauge (side arm, over arm, round arm), a seam position / finger / hand gauge (ball held loosely in fingertips, deep in the palm of the hand, fingers along / across the seams) and a wrist-snap timing zone (snap too early it sinks too much, too late it rises, spot on, combined with the right grip and the right seam position, and a 100% accurate “path trace” and it’s a Walter “Big Train” Johnson style bat-smashing fastball, then I’d know instinctively what to do.

And I think there’d be a big attraction for baseball stat-fans.

Maybe this as an option for those who are more into the potential of a slug-fest – or even a bowling type premium content add-on.

I’d certainly feel it was value enough to pay for it.

When is there going to be online play or season mode

We’re still working on it, I’m afraid. Unfortunately, some of our original code doesn’t match the tournament concept very well, so we’re having to change a lot under the hood. Although we don’t have much to show for it, there has been a lot of progress and this is absolutely going to happen.

Keep an eye on the forums and we’ll make more announcements here as we get closer.

Posted By: Rj

Quoting Wykey:

Would a fielding ‘mini game’ be possible?

Maybe at the moment of impact, a short (maybe a short frame animation) snap shot of the direction and speed of the ball could be shown, and then the player could have a short period of time to move their closest fielder to intercept – maybe by drawing the path that the fielder would follow.

The faster and more accurate the placement, the higher the likelihood of either a catch, or a smooth pick-up and potential ‘bullet’ return throw.

For throwing in to a base, again a snap-shot of the base / base fielder, then the player could draw a return (in similar fashion to the cricket bowling) finishing with a timed tap to determine the ultimate target for the throw.

We’ve been playing around with a few ideas but we keep falling back to just adding a “chose which base to throw to” mechanic, which doesn’t really add a lot of fun to the game. The biggest problem we face is that switching camera views can be disorientating and often means you lose track of where the ball actually is. We will keep working on it and hopefully can draw some inspiration from your ideas.

I’d also quite like to see a more involved pitching mechanic – perhaps borrowing the motion of the cricket bowling.

Actually, the bowling mechanic in Cricket came from an experiment in Baseball pitching :) The original idea didn’t work in Baseball (it was <ins>way</ins> too complex) but we’ve polished it a lot since then in Cricket, so we probably should look at trying it again in Baseball.

Posted By: Wykey

I’d also quite like to see a more involved pitching mechanic – perhaps borrowing the motion of the cricket bowling.

Posted By: Rj

We are working on that exact issue at the moment and expect to get it into the next update.

It’s been one of the features we have been working on for a long time actually. The biggest problem with this feature for us is making sure that less honourable players can’t use this feature to cheat by quitting the game if they’re about to get caught or when it looks like the opposition might get a home run. We don’t think there are many of that type of player enjoying Baseball but if there are any and we didn’t take care of that side of things, they might ruin your boasting rights from being in the Hall of Fame.

Posted By: tcb

Our forums use Textile markup language. The idea is to use something that’s a little easier to grasp than HTML.

Font style

*bold*

_italic_

*_bold italic_*

+underline+

-strike-through-

Display:

bold

italic

bold italic

<ins>underline</ins>

<del>strike-through</del>

Inline images

!image_url! displays an image located at image_url (textile syntax)

!>image_url! right floating image

!{width:300px}image_url! sets the width of the image

External links

If you want to display a specific text instead of the URL, you can use the standard textile syntax:

"Spinfast web site":http://www.spinfast.com.au

displays: Spinfast web site

Blockquotes

Start the paragraph with bq. Don’t forget the space after the “.”.

bq. Sometimes you want to quote more than a word or two. Sometimes you want to quote a long sentence, or even a whole paragraph. That's when block quotes come in handy. They keep things neat and tidy as the number of word pile up. Block quotes, use them, love them.

Display:

Posted By: BigBats

Quoting tcb:

We’ve been looking at this and think we will do something along these lines. It might be an option you can toggle, or we might just fade the strike zone as players go up the diffculty levels.

We’re still toying with our options at the moment, but it is an interesting idea.

End Quote
That’s great to hear you guys are looking into some options. Both ideas sound great. Looking foward to an update.
